Meeting July 23, 2009 – Speaker Jim Peterson – Peterson Roofing
Sorry for the late post everyone as my week ending was rather hectic. Our Education Coordinator spoke today about the “Value of Visitors”. You may not realize it at first glance, but each week when you come to BNI, the people who hold perhaps the greatest immediate potential for your business may not be the members at all but rather the visitors. It is an opportunity that can be realized by any member – all it takes is a couple of simple actions each week. You will never know the potential of each of those guests to your business, unless you make it your business to find out.

Today we heard from Jim Peterson of Peterson Roofing, Inc. and he spoke in detail about the issues his industry is facing from the EPA and ENERGY STAR due to the rise in popularity of Cool roof’s (White) which from the outside look to be great for energy savings and the environment, but in the long term are not and more importantly are a huge liability issue for the roofers as the standards set forth by the EPA even thought followed if something goes wrong will not be the fault of the EPA but the fault will fall onto the roofer whom just followed the standards set forth.
Jim quoted from a article written by Thomas Hutchinson, a leader in his industry and here are some of the highlights of his talk on White Roofing and other industry standards being changed so called for the better.
Condensation
most architect and code bodies believe that cool roof membranes with single layer insulation result in an energy savings, which is a misconception. In the Midwest , for example where the climate is conductive to condensation the movement of moisture-laden air through insulation joints to a membrane’s underside result in condensation.
Reflectivity - Good or Bad?
The jump onto the cool roof bandwagon has been fast and furious, it appears no one stopped to ask where we’re deflecting the suns rays. He answers: in part onto adjacent masonry walls and parapets, exterior insulation and finishing systems’ walls, wall sealant joints, into rooftop equipment, etc. These magnified rays’ effects on adjacent buildings have not been good. Best example is masonry expands when heated, and the additional rays is beyond what can be expected in design and undertaken by construction tolerances.
These are just a few of the points brought up today by Jim and if you wish to learn more please contact Jim. And if not Jim still urges everyone to research new product claims and proceed with caution with regard to long term promises but also intended results.
